With the participation of experts from Solid Waste Management (SWM) sector in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, the final project review meeting of the r4d project, “Challenges of Municipal Solid Waste Management: Learning from Post-Crisis Governance Initiatives in South Asia” was held at Amagi Aria, Negombo, Sri Lanka from 15th to 17th January, 2023.
The objective of the meeting was to review the project and identify individual and joint learning, reflections on partnerships, and preparation of project completion report and organize an exposure visit to the field in Sri Lanka.
Complimentary to the meeting, a field visit to Badovita low income settlement, Karadiyana waste dumping site and meetings with stakeholders including meeting with Western Province Waste Management Authority were also organized by Janathakshan.
The project is funded by the Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development (r4d), jointly run by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC). This was collaborative research between the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and partners in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The overall aim of the project is to contribute to efficient Municiple Solid Waste Management systems in South Asia which creates a platform for knowledge sharing on SWM best practices in the region, scales up those practices through policy intervention.
Both University of Colombo and Janathakshan (GTE) Ltd engaged in this project as the Sri Lankan partners to analyze top-down, inter-disciplinary initiatives of the citizens based in the Colombo metropolitan area in the Municipal Council of Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia, and in the Municipal Council of Boralesgamuwa.
