Janathakshan’s Vision for the Next Five Years: Building Resilience, Promoting Sustainability, and Empowering Communities

As Janathakshan (GTE) Ltd. enters a new strategic cycle (2025–2029), we proudly reflect on the impactful journey of our previous strategy period (2021–2024), which laid a strong foundation for the transformative work ahead. During the last cycle, Janathakshan significantly enhanced resilience across Sri Lanka, directly benefiting over 730,000 vulnerable individuals (306,600 women and 423,400 men) in 146,000 households. Our interventions spanned 240 Grama Niladhari Divisions in 55 Divisional Secretariats across 10 districts and 7 provinces. We also contributed to the regional and global levels through partnerships such as the South Asia climate migrant project with CANSA.

Key achievements included:

  • Advancing climate resilience and disaster risk reduction.
  • Promoting low-carbon development, including GHG emission reduction and measurement.
  • Expanding circular economic initiatives, especially in solid waste management and ocean plastic reduction.
  • Supporting livelihood security and inclusive community development.

Our New Strategic Focus: 2025–2029

Building on these successes, Janathakshan’s new five-year strategy prioritizes three interconnected pillars: Disaster & Climate Crisis, Economic Security & Livelihoods, Policy, Partnerships, and Knowledge.

Under Disaster & Climate Crisis, Janathakshan will continue to work on climate resilience, natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, and disaster preparedness. With Sri Lanka’s increasing vulnerability to biodiversity and climate-related risks, the organization will prioritize community-based adaptation strategies, ecosystem restoration, and low-carbon development pathways that integrate local knowledge with global practices.

In the area of Economic Security & Livelihoods, Janathakshan aims to promote inclusive economic growth by enhancing livelihood options, especially in rural and underserved communities. Through capacity building, entrepreneurship support, and circular economy initiatives, the organization will create more sustainable and diversified income sources.

The third pillar, Policy, Partnerships, and Knowledge, focuses on driving systemic change by influencing policies, strengthening partnerships, and improving knowledge sharing. Janathakshan will serve as a bridge between grassroots experiences and national and regional policy frameworks, ensuring that development solutions are locally relevant and widely scalable.

Throughout the strategy cycle, crosscutting themes such as gender equality, disability inclusion, participatory governance, and urbanization will be mainstreamed across all projects. Janathakshan also places strong emphasis on robust Monitoring & Evaluation systems to track progress, foster accountability, and ensure evidence-based learning.

As we look ahead, Janathakshan is poised to be a catalyst for positive change, committed to transforming lives, protecting the environment, and building a more resilient and equitable Sri Lanka and South Asia.
