Official Handover of the Climate-Smart Agro School Garden at Anuradhapura Central College

On June 20, 2025, a significant step toward promoting climate education and sustainable agriculture was marked with the official handover of the Climate-Smart Agro School Garden to student ownership at Anuradhapura Central College. This initiative was implemented under the Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project (CRIWMP), funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through the Ministry of Irrigation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The event was graced by the presence of several distinguished guests, including the District Secretary of Anuradhapura, Zonal Education Director, CRIWMP Project Director, District Project Manager from UNDP, Senior Project Manager and Project Manager from Janathakshan, along with the Principal, teachers, and students of Anuradhapura Central College.

The garden was designed and constructed by Janathakshan GTE Ltd., with the aim of enhancing the practical agricultural knowledge of students and fostering their awareness of climate-resilient farming practices. This hands-on learning space not only integrates climate-smart agriculture into the school curriculum but also inspires the next generation to take active roles in sustainable land use and food production.

By officially handing over the garden to student ownership, the project promotes student-led stewardship, responsibility, and a deep-rooted understanding of environmental sustainability. The initiative demonstrates a successful collaboration between government agencies, development partners, and educational institutions to empower youth and strengthen community resilience.

This handover marks a milestone in integrating climate-smart agriculture into the education system and showcases a scalable model for other schools across Sri Lanka to follow.
