Showcasing Climate-Resilient Rural Development – CRIWMP Field Visits Day 02

On 16th August 2025, a field inspection visit was carried out in Palugaswewa, focusing on project sites under the Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project (CRIWMP). The visit was led by the Honorable Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Social Empowerment, together with the Director General of Samurdhi, marking the second day of high-level monitoring visits in the region.

The Palugaswewa inspection highlighted ongoing efforts to improve water access, promote climate-smart agriculture, and strengthen rural livelihoods in Sri Lanka’s dry zone. As part of the broader CRIWMP initiative, the interventions in Palugaswewa aim to empower farming families by ensuring sustainable use of natural resources, rehabilitating traditional irrigation systems, and enhancing adaptive capacities to withstand climate variability.

During the visit, the officials engaged with local farmer organizations and community representatives to review progress and address challenges faced during implementation. Emphasis was placed on ensuring participatory monitoring and accountability through village-level committees and grievance redress mechanisms already established under the project.

The field inspection reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing climate resilience, rural development, and social empowerment in line with national priorities. By strengthening synergies between government agencies, community-based organizations, and development partners, CRIWMP continues to serve as a model for inclusive, climate-resilient rural development in Sri Lanka.
