Empowering Resource Collectors through Hybrid Compost Training in Ja-Ela

As part of PHINLA II’s efforts to strengthen entrepreneurial opportunities, Janathakshan successfully conducted a Hybrid Compost-Making Training for Resource Collectors (RCs) in Ja-Ela on 30th June 2025.

This initiative is designed to enhance the income-generating potential of RCs by enabling them to produce and sell high-quality compost. To further boost their market access, RCs engaged in compost production will be linked with Resource Banks (RBs) for promotion and distribution. Households will also be encouraged to purchase compost from nearby RBs or even receive compost packs in exchange for recyclables handed over to RBs.

The training was delivered in two insightful sessions:

Session 1: Theoretical Overview highlighted the importance of Hybrid Compost Technology in solid waste management, its benefits, and its role in strengthening RB operations and environmental sustainability.

Session 2: Practical Training provided hands-on experience in preparing bacterial liquid, biochar, hybrid compost, and techniques in labelling, packing, and marketing compost products.

The session was facilitated by Mr. Nimal Premathilaka, Technical Specialist of the PHINLA II Project, and Mr. Indika Priyantha Lal, Project Coordinator of Janathakshan.

Through such initiatives, PHINLA II continues to support both sustainable livelihoods and environmental responsibility, empowering communities while promoting circular economy practices.

Together, we are building stronger community structures to transform waste into opportunity and promote lasting sustainability.
