OUR HISTORY

Janathakshan was established in a timely manner to fill a gap in Sri Lanka’s accessibility of green technology and services for sustainable development.

In July 2011, after over 25 years of operation, the international charity Practical Action decided to gradually phase out from Sri Lanka. In response, on December 27, 2011, the leadership of Practical Action Sri Lanka decided to establish a local organization named Janathakshan with the goal of continuing Practical Action’s legacy in Sri Lanka. Practical Action welcomed the decision to set up a local organization to continue its legacy in Sri Lanka and supported by providing essential resources. As a result, the organisation formalized registration, started formally functioning in parallel to Practical Action on 1st April 2012.

What is Janathakshan

Janathakshan meaning ‘people’s technology’ or ‘technology for people’ was registered as a limited by Guarantee Company (not for profit) on the 27th of December 2011.

Through creative projects, Janathakshan will keep demonstrating practical technology-based strategies for reducing poverty on the ground and contribute to sustainable development. It will additionally generate knowledge that could be shared, network, and be a powerful advocate both nationally and internationally.

How is Janathakshan different

Janathakshan is the practice leader and a knowledge sharer of green technology and green development concepts. Inculcating green attitudes amongst our clientele and enlisting their long term commitment is a part of the solution.  Our confidence in our ability to find workable, environmentally friendly solutions to practically any daily problem stems from our 25+ years of expertise and knowledge.

Following the conclusion of our initial strategic phase, Janathakshan began creating a five-year strategic road map (2017–2024) with the theme It Matters Logo incorporating three core strategic priorities; Building Resilience, Promoting Low Carbon Development Pathways and Circular Economy Processes integrating ten thematic priorities to contribute to Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Agenda.
